DHS Art Classes on the Move…
On March 24, the high school art classes of DePue traveled to the Field Museum in Chicago to view the "Aztec World" exhibit that is on display through April 18. Forty students and four chaperones made the trip to see over four hundred artifacts of this civilization, many never seen outside of Mexico before, in this one stop exhibition. Students learned that the Aztec culture and society encompassed much more than previously thought. Aztec farmers tranformed wetlands and dry hillsides into lush, cultivated fields and fed a nation on a bounty of food, Aztec merchants and artisans sculpted magnificent works of art, and created prosperous markets while establishing long distance trade networks. Aztecs as warriors conquered territories and established an elaborate tribute system to build a powerful empire of some ten million people. DHS art teacher Mrs. Ballard said the students had an amazing time.
As Rulers, the Aztecs presided over a complex religious, military, and administrative structure and engineered towering stone temples and sophisticated waterworks—all without the aid of metal tools.
DePue Hosts J.H. Art Show
On March 14, Depue played host to members of the Bureau Valley Elementary Conference for the junior high art show. Eight schools in the conference competed in this annual event, with ribbons given in more than thirty-six categories. Best-of -Show ribbons were awarded for 2-D and 3-D work to Bureau Valley South this year.
