What is diversity? Diversity, as the sociology class defined it, means ethnic, gender, racial, and socioeconomic variety in a situation, institution, or group. On May 14th, Mr. Steven’s sociology class held a diversity forum in the gym to educate and to send an awareness of what it means to be diverse. The forum consisted of a panel made up of the sociology students. These students answered questions that were asked by the moderator, Mrs. Gorenz. The students were juniors: Jennifer Wick, Kevin Hernandez, Monique Mata, Alejandra Campos, and Alex Mickel. Mrs. Staudenmeir, and Mr. Stevens also took part in the forum. The audience got to see a two part video, that was made up of teachers and students, who answered questions such as, "What is diversity?," among many others. The video was put out by video conductors: Erik Acosta and Kevin Hernandez. At the end of the forum, all students including junior high and high school could participate in an open discussion. There were also students from IVCC, who gave their opinions on what it means to be diverse in a college setting. A special guest, Dr. Gomez, Dean of Humanities, Fine Arts and Social Sciences at IVCC, gave a special speech with a memorable line, "Everyone has an opportunity. But not everyone has an equal chance."

On Tuesday May,11

The 8th graders traveled to the windy city, (Chicago) for some fun.

At 7:45 A.M. students met at the school for donuts and juice at the gym. At 8:00 A.M. they headed for Chicago. At 10:15 A.M. the students arrived at Brookfield Zoo.

At 3:45 P.M. The students went to Ed Debevic’s for dinner. Ed Debevic’s is a restaurant in downtown Chicago where the servers are rude while taking and serving orders. It is a 50’s eatery where meals are generally under $10.00. The students got to try the world’s smallest ice cream which is literally no bigger than a shot glass.

The students returned home at 6:00 P.M.
